The Story of "Wasting Time"

*Wasting Time* is a poignant, retrospective piece that takes the listener on an emotionally charged journey of loss, regret, and self-reckoning, ultimately arriving at a powerful message of redemption and caution. The song encapsulates the raw struggle of facing one’s own faults while caught in a cycle of avoidance—balancing the weight of past mistakes against the desperate search for relief.

At its core, *Wasting Time* serves as a vivid warning to make the most of a most precious gift—time.

*Wasting Time* was conceptualized by Josh Anderton in the Winter of 2017. Written in the aftermath of losing someone cherished, the song emerged as a means of processing overwhelming emotions. For months, music fell silent, replaced by escapism and self-destruction. Then, as if calling itself into existence, the chorus—*“I've been wastin' time, drinkin' every night”*—surfaced, compelling Josh to pick up his guitar and confront the pain head-on.

Initially a stripped-down acoustic piece, *Wasting Time* underwent a powerful transformation beginning in late 2024 with the collaboration of Mark Merrick and Frank Austin.

The reimagined version introduces an alternate bridge and layered instrumentation, elevating the song beyond its solitary origins. Now richer in texture and dynamics, it stands as the first official release of this artistic partnership—an undeniable milestone in Josh’s journey as a songwriter.

*"Music has always been the way I process things. I have a song or two about pretty much every major life event I've been through. Writing is usually my go-to outlet when I'm struggling with something. But *Wasting Time* was different—I stopped living my life for months before I wrote it. I buried myself in drinking and self-pity, and music felt out of reach. When I finally picked up my guitar again, this song was already waiting for me. Revamping it with Mark and Frank made it so much better than it ever was when I played it by myself. I couldn't be happier with this release, and I'm excited for the future."*
